PREP FOOTBALL: THOUSAND OAKS' COBOS NAMED MOST VALUABLE IN MARMONTE LEAGUE.

The season started shakily with Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. It has light industry and manufacturing. In the expanding and developing southern California area, Thousand Oaks is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, marked by a population increase of more than 35% between 1980 and 1990. Once known generally as the Conejo Valley, it became a stagecoach stop in 1874. California Lutheran College is there. losing its first three non-league games, then the Lancers losing to Simi Valley in the league opener.

After that, however, the team turned it around. A 31-31 tie against powerful Westlake was its only league blemish thereafter.

The run helped Thousand Oaks earn Coaching Staff of the Year in the Marmonte League and it helped Wes Cobos earn Most Valuable Player honors.

``I was pretty excited when I heard the news,'' Cobos said. ``I was pretty much overjoyed. I have to share the award with the lineman, though, they are the one's that made it possible to do what I did.''

Cobos, a 5-11, 170-pound senior, scored 24 touchdowns and ended the regular season as Ventura County's leading rusher.

Cobos injured his right ankle in the regular season finale, a 42-41 victory over Newbury Newbury, town (1991 pop. 31,488), West Berkshire, S central England. In a farming region, Newbury trades in wool, malt, and farm products. Paper, furniture, and metal products are also made. In the Middle Ages the town was an important textile manufacturing center. The 16th-century cloth hall contains a museum. Civil war battles were fought at Newbury in 1643 and 1644. Park, and missed the Lancers' Southern Section Division IV playoff game to Lompoc, a 35-20, loss.
