PREP FOOTBALL: SURF 'N TURF : MCLAUGHLIN IS RIDING MOORPARK WAVE.Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer Dylan McLaughlin almost feels as comfortable hanging 10 as hanging up passes for his Moorpark High receivers. ``I love surfing,'' said the Musketeers senior quarterback. ``I just started out two years ago, but you can usually find me at the beach on weekends.'' On Friday nights, McLaughlin has ridden a big wave of early success after throwing a handful of passes as a junior backup. McLaughlin doubted himself for a brief moment in his varsity start on Sept. 10 against Nordhoff despite throwing for 260 yards. He threw two interceptions, no touchdowns and the Musketeers lost 21-7. ``It's not exactly the perfect first game that you'd like to have,'' McLaughlin said. McLaughlin's talented group of receivers, led by surfing buddy Chris Vizzi (31 catches, 461 yards, three touchdowns) and Scott Rollins (16 receptions, 317 yards), made the chore of being the marquee quarterback easier. McLaughlin threw for a combined 353 yards and three touchdowns in league wins over Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. and Agoura. ``He was always under control,'' Vizzi said of McLaughlin's Week 1 struggles. ``He's a good quarterback. . . . McLaughlin does not have an in-your-face attitude in the huddle. ``I get pretty excited and we want to win pretty bad. . . . All in all I'm a pretty quiet guy,'' McLaughlin said. ``I'm verbal, but I'm not the kind of guy who's going to get out there and shout at people. The guys appreciate that. Nobody likes to see anyone else getting on their case.'' He has the perfect character traits for the Musketeers, who tend to shout `Let's have some fun' throughout their practices. (But) we go out there having fun. That's the key to Moorpark football.'' McLaughlin's sudden development is critical to the Musketeers' plans of making some noise in the Marmonte League. Despite being the pass-happy Marmonte's most prolific quarterback thus far, McLaughlin figures this will be his final go-round with football, though he'd be willing to listen to any prospective college recruiters. ``I figure this is my senior year; I'm just going out there and do my thing. Whatever happens happens,'' McLaughlin said. And there's always the beach. McLaughlin keeps his throwing arm in shape with his surfing partners Vizzi and running back Joe Papandrea. ``There's a lot of paddling pad·dling n. 1.
