PREP FOOTBALL: MATTER, JAKES HEAD THE LIST FOURTEEN AREA RECRUITS COMMIT.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Fourteen high school and junior college recruits from the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys officially committed to four-year universities Wednesday.

Kyle Matter of Hart and Kaelen Jakes of Valencia are probably the biggest names. Matter, a quarterback who earned Daily News Player of the Year honors, signed with Stanford. Jakes, a defensive lineman who had 12 sacks and made several All-America lists, committed to Texas.

He was drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of California.  (California) and David Neill David Neill (born July 17 1980[]) was an American college football quarterback for the University of Nevada. In 1998 he set an NCAA record for most touchdown passes in a season by a freshman with 29 thrown.  (Nevada).

``All three have done a lot of hard work,'' Hart coach Mike Herrington said. ``They had enough success on the football field to get an athletic scholarship An athletic scholarship is a form of scholarship to attend a college or university awarded to an individual based predominantly on their ability to play in a sport. They are common in the United States, but in many countries they are rare or non-existent. , but as far as the total number of athletes who get scholarships, three in a row is very rare. But Kyle is well-deserved.''

Matter, an honor student, said Stanford's academic tradition was the deciding factor.

``That was the main reason I chose Stanford,'' he said. ``You can't beat it scholastically, plus the football program is awesome.''

On signing day, Hart had a special ceremony for Matter. His parents brought him a basket of homemade cookies and a fancy new pen.

``I think the best thing is Kyle has an opportunity to go to a great school,'' said his father, Art. ``He has always put an emphasis on academics as well as athletics. He committed back in May of last year, so he was eager to make it official and eager to get to a new school and move on. It's just a great environment up there.''

Matter plans to enter Stanford's masters program in business.

Jakes used to live in Texas and still has family there, so the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder should feel right at home with the Longhorns.
