PREP FOCUS: TURPIN: DURESS IN A PROM DRESS.Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer Simi Valley High's Annmarie Turpin knew this past weekend would be a hectic one. Friday, it was the Ventura County Track Championships. Saturday, it was the prom at Sony Studios in Culver City. Sunday she was to finally make a decision where to attend college. ``This week was so hard,'' Turpin said. ``Especially county, because there was so much pressure.'' Turpin excelled under the weight, winning three events (400, high jump and 300 hurdles) and placing second in a fourth (long jump). ``The prom was more of a relaxation thing, because I didn't take it to serious,'' Turpin said. ``Some people went all out. I just used it as a time to get away and rest.'' The deadline on Turpin's letter-of-intent was today, but she received a new one in the mail Saturday that gives her until May 10. ``I know which way I'm leaning,'' she said. ``But I wish I would have knew going into this week that I had the extra time. It would have eased some of the stress. ``It's good because I get to make a more educated decision.'' Turpin, who was a standout for the Pioneers in basketball, is picking between UC Irvine and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. All good things come to an end: El Camino Real's Stephanie Frasco had her scoreless inning streak broken Saturday against Righetti of Santa Maria in the Thousand Oaks tournament. Frasco allowed two runs to the Warriors but picked up the win in the Conquistadores' 5-3 victory. Frasco, who hadn't allowed a run during the season, had pitched 34 scoreless innings and walked just four batters during the string. The junior improved to 6-0 with the win against Righetti. Spring signing: Burbank resident Vanessa Dupont, who attends Immaculate Heart High in Los Feliz, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of the Pacific. Dupont, 6-footer, was an All-Southern Section Division III first-team selection and averaged 16.1 points and 13.3 rebounds a game for the Pandas. Tuneup: Senior Lauren Fleshman of Canyon finished second in the 1,500 meter race at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine on Sunday with a time of 4:27.73. The event included collegiate and open competitors. Her time converts to a sub-4:50 in the 1,600 meters. It was the fastest ever by Santa Clarita area girls' high school runner and is the fourth best ever in the region. Darcy Arreola, a former NCAA champion from Cal State Northridge, won in 4:22.15. ``I was afraid I was going to get eighth or ninth (because of the age and experience of the competitors),'' said Fleshman. ``Now, I wish I had more competition.'' Fleshman, who will run in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races at the Foothill League prelims Tuesday at Birmingham High, will attend Stanford in the fall. - Kirby Lee contributed to this report. |
