PREP FOCUS: MT. SAC HOME FOR CANYON.Byline: Ramona Shelburne Ramona Shelburne is an American sports journalist currently writing for the Los Angeles Daily News. Shelburne was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, California where she was a class valedictorian. Staff Writer The Canyon High cross country team trains in Canyon Country and runs Foothill League races at Lake Castaic Park. However, ask Cowboys seniors Troy Werner and Brenda Stevens where their home course is and they'll tell you it's about 1 1/2 hours away at the hilly, 2.91-mile course of Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill. Mt. in Walnut. The Mt. SAC Invitational on Saturday will be Stevens' 13th race on the course and Werner's 10th. Canyon coach Dave Delong said they have a patient strategy at Mt. SAC he hopes his other runners emulate. ``It's fun to watch them run the Mt. SAC course,'' Delong said. ``They tend to run the first mile in the middle of the pack, then they go out of sight for a while, and when they come back five minutes later, they're in the top 10. It's like, what happened, how'd they do that?'' The key to the race, Delong said, is to pace yourself on the flat, first mile of the course before hitting the hilly section. Stevens and Werner, who normally prefer to run from the middle of the pack in the early stages of a race, are well-suited to the Mt. SAC course. ``The tendency is to go out real fast because it feels easy at first. But then you get to the hills and you are too tired,'' Delong said. ``You have to be more comfortable after the first mile of Mt. SAC than other courses because of what's waiting for you. That's just our strategy, though.'' Considering the Canyon boys won the Mt. SAC Invitational last year and three runners, including Morgan (15 minutes, 11 seconds, fifth place), placed in the top five, the strategy seems to be working fine. --Long road back: Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. That leaves wide receiver Lance Baird as the signal-caller. He took most of the snaps Friday for the third consecutive week. Baird has played well in difficult circumstances, leading Thousand Oaks to victories over Simi Valley three weeks ago and Calabasas on Friday. He could get the call this week against undefeated Moorpark in what figures to be the season's biggest test for the Lancers' offense. --Life in the High Desert League: When undefeated Mojave travels 25 miles east along Highway 58 to play High Desert League rival Desert of Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. (6-0, 1-0) on Friday, it will be one of the shortest bus trips of the year for the Mustangs. The next week, Mojave will travel 4 1/2 hours and almost 200 miles up Interstate 395 to play Bishop. Desert made that trip last week and won 38-17. ``I was so tired the next morning,'' said Desert running back Jason Napoleon, who rushed for 212 yards and five touchdowns. ``We didn't get home 'til almost 4 in the morning.'' Later in the year, Desert will drive almost 2 1/2 hours to play Kern Valley, and Mojave will bus 1 1/2 hours to Frazier Mountain Frazier Mountain is a mountain (or peak) that is located near Frazier Park, California and Lake of the Woods, California to the north. Frazier Mountain is 8,026 feet (2446 m) . ``It's just part of the routine in this league,'' Desert coach Joel Sweitzer said. ``You have to learn to deal with it.'' --Secondary measures: The Moorpark football team's aggressive, quick defense continues to smother the prolific statistics of opposing quarterbacks. Moorpark already has been tough on standout Marmonte League quarterbacks Rudy Carpenter of Newbury Park and Royal of Simi Valley's Kyle Uebelhardt. Thousand Oaks coach Mike Sanders said the Musketeers' speed starts at the defensive front and continues into the secondary. ``They don't make many mistakes,'' Sanders said. Added Royal coach Gene Uebelhardt: ``If the defensive backs are faster than your receivers, it's hard.'' Kyle Uebelhardt completed just 16 of 45 passes and was intercepted four times in the Highlanders' 35-14 loss to the Musketeers on Friday. Moorpark was without one of its top cover men in the victory, as Sam Hollis had leg cramps throughout the fourth quarter. But defensive backs Cory Swenson and Cody Holland had game-preserving interceptions in the final minutes. ``People kind of underrate us because we're not that big, but we have speed, and that makes up for it,'' Holland said. ``And we're not afraid We're not Afraid! is a website which was created just hours after the 7 July 2005 London bombings as a place for Internet users from around the world to state that they were not being intimidated by the actions of the terrorists. to hit anybody.''
