The team did earn 14 shutouts on the season and limited opponents to one goal in nine other games.

``We had a quote,'' Landress said. ``Offense wins games, defense wins championships.''

Said coach Jack Sidwell: ``No one really pays attention to the job they do, but I noticed and their teammates noticed, too.''

Saturday's victory was the last high school game for seniors Erica Frechman, Landress and Darcy Wooten. The three were starters on all four consecutive championship teams and this season received help from sophomores Tanya Schmidt and Heather Collins and junior Cari Downey. ``It has been a marvelous thing to watch them play,'' said Sidwell. ``They are all talented soccer players and intelligent gals.''

Wooten, who could possibly be the school's valedictorian, is headed for Stanford. In addition to a couple of game tapes, Young and his assistants traveled to San Diego on Saturday night to watch the Saints play in the San Diego Section Division III title game.

St. Augustine lost to University of San Diego High, but Young expects them to be a significant challenge for his team.

``They have some very good athletes and we match up well,'' Young said. ``University is a lot like us, a bigger team, and we saw what they did to beat them, so hopefully we can do what they did.''

Harvard-Westlake's girls basketball team failed in its bid for a second consecutive section title, but earned a spot in the state regional tournament.

The Wolverines (25-5) will play at Kearny High of San Diego on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Komets (19-9) were the San Diego Section Division III champions.
