ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

RHUBEN WILLIAMS

Senior

Eagle Rock Track & Field

Despite the recent death of his father, Williams has had solid efforts inthe shot put and discus in the Arcadia Invitational and the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

His father, Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  ``Fats'' Williams, died after a lengthy illness at age 66 three days before the meet. Rhuben still competed, winning the shot put and finishing third in the discus at 184-3, the best mark ever by a City Section athlete. His effort in the discus was nearly 10 feet better than his previous best.

At Mt. SAC on Saturday, Williams won the shot put (63-0 1/4) and discus (178-1).

``He is always in my thoughts,'' Williams said about his father. ``I have a lot of emotions running around inside me, but the biggest one is relief that it is all over. I feel like it is a weight off my shoulders because he is in a better place right now. With all the bad things I feel, it also feels kind of good.''

DENEEKA TORREY

Senior

Taft Track and Field

Torrey won the 100-meter high hurdles in 13.99 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays for the fifth-best mark in the nation this season.

The Colorado-bound Torrey has shaved nearly a half second off her best of 14.43 and crushed her school record of 14.26 set at the Pasadena Games on March 25. At Mt. SAC, Torrey handily hand·i·ly

HEAD TO HEAD

KATHRYN NEVARD

Camarillo

Pitcher

NICOLE NICOLE Nearly Intelligent Computer Operated Language Examiner (chatterbot)  ANGELO

Thousand Oaks

Pitcher

These two teams rarely play since Camarillo moved to the Pacific View League. But they're two of the best teams in the region, so any time they play it's an intriguing matchup. Nevard is a hard-throwing, intelligent pitcher who relies on movement and ball placement. When she's on top of her game, few in Southern California are as impressive. Angelo continues to get better, now fully established as the Lancers' No. 1 starter, a role she assumed when Sheridan Fowler was injured. Like Nevard, Angelo has power, control and good movement. But she's smart enough to know she doesn't have to overpower o·ver·pow·er

Camarillo at Thousand Oaks

These matchups used to decide the Marmonte League title. Although Camarillo has moved into the Pacific View League, these nonleague baseball and softball games remain exciting. In softball, Camarillo pitcher Kathryn Nevard, bound for Illinois, faces the No. 1-ranked team led by Nicole Angelo. In baseball, youth rules as freshman Delmon Young of Camarillo and Billy Lockin of Thousand Oaks are in the spotlight.
