PREP BASKETBALL: MVP MUNUZ SPARKS H.W. TO T.O. TITLE.

Byline: Danny Schumacher Special to the Daily News

Apparently Harvard-Westlake's basketball program doesn't know the good times are supposed to be over.

Despite losing the heart of its squad, the two-time defending state champion has rattled off an impressive start at the beginning of this season, including an 81-77 victory over Dos Pueblos on Friday night in the championship of the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Munoz, the lone remaining starter from last year's team, sparked the offense with timely 3-pointers and led the defensive pressure in the frontcourt.

``He helps to settle the young guys down,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Greg Hilliard said. ``He'll get a strip (on defense) and go down and hit a three.''

After struggling with its shooting early in the game, the Wolverines were able to get their perimeter game working the rest of the way. Guard Alex Minn added another outside threat with 14 points and sophomore guard Russell Lakey drove inside for 11 points. Eric Gaffner added 13 points.

, Harvard-Westlake's inexperience showed at times, especially at the start as Dos Pueblos was able build an early 11-2 lead. Unable to work with efficiency on offense, the Wolverines were forced into five turnovers in the game's first three minutes "Three Minutes" is the 46th episode of Lost. Foul trouble was also a factor as starting forward Alex Holmes Alex Holmes (born August 22, 1981 in San Diego, California) was a National Football League tight end. Professional career

``We've been getting a lot of lucky bounces of the ball,'' Hilliard said. ``We're not ready to be called a good team yet.''

Credit Munoz for holding his team together as the Wolverines settled down to take command of the game in the final minutes of the half. He nailed three 3-pointers and added much needed pressure on defense for Harvard-Westlake, sparking a 25-7 second quarter run that helped the Woverines take a 40-32 lead at halftime.

The Chargers aided by disappearing offensively during the final minutes of the half. Dos Pueblos was held without a field goal for the final 5:24 of the half.

Newbury Park 77, Grant 69: Daniel Bobik sparked his team in the final 1:51, scoring seven points as the Panthers stretched out what had been a narrow two-point lead.

Bobik, a junior guard, scored a team-leading 26 points. He was equally impressive on defense, helping to force the Lancers lanc·er

But Arenas was unable to offset Grant's sometimes erratic and sloppy play on offense.

A malfunctioning scoreboard panel didn't help with the game's fluidness either. Three times the scoreboard went blank, causing the game to delayed each time.

The game was also delayed twice in the fourth quarter.
