PREP BASKETBALL: INDIANS' GIRLS DOING WELL SO FAR.

Byline: KEVIN CONNELLY Kevin Connelly was born in Middlesbrough, England. He is an impressionist comedian, and after dinner speaker and is probably most famous for his role on the popular BBC television programme 'Dead Ringers'.  Special to the Daily News

When girls' basketball began this season, most people in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  listed Hart High among the favorites to win a Foothill League title.

There was speculation that the graduation of star point guard Taylor Lilley (Oregon) would spoil another championship run, but Hart coach Dave Munroe insisted the Indians could emerge as an even better team without her.

If the first two weeks of the season are any indication, Munroe was right on with that prediction. Entering Saturday night's Buena Tournament final against Buena of Ventura, the Indians (4-0) have outscored their four opponents by a combined score of 248-124.

Those wins come against four quality opponents, including a Chatsworth team that many say will be best in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  City Section this season. Hart defeated Chatsworth 54-22 on Thursday.

The Indians are off to a better start than last season, when they began the season 3-1. The Indians finished last year 28-5 and defeated crosstown rival Canyon in the Southern Section Div. I-AA final.

Another local girls' team to watch out for is Saugus High. The Centurions (4-0) are off to another fast start again this season, outscoring their opponents 236-132 so far.

Saugus coach Eric Olsson admittedly likes to play a soft schedule to start the season, and his Centurions have made the best of it.

Sophomore Gabrielle Conn leads the team with 13 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Nicole Hicks Hicks   , Edward 1780-1849.

Saugus is one of the best young teams in the area, and expects to be really tested next week in the Ventura Optimist Tournament.

The Centurions started off last season 10-0 before finishing with a 19-9 record.

Canyon forward Nicole Leon is emerging as one of the top players in the area. The Cal-Bakersfield talent has averaged 16.6 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.9 steals in seven games this season for the Cowboys (4-3).

Leon, who averaged 12 points last season, is one of the top players in the Foothill League, which also includes Oregon-bound Hart forward Tatianna Thomas.
