victory in six years, it will be up to senior Mike Munn to keep the Cowboys alive in the postseason.

Munn (4-3, 4.31 ERA) will start today's second-round Division II game at Damien, a team Munn knows little about except that it is favored to win.

``I don't think I have anything to lose; they're supposed to be really good,'' he said Sunday. ``There's nothing I can do but pitch. I'm kind of anxious, actually.''

Munn and the Cowboys (13-11) might not be in this position were it not for the improvements he worked on during the regular season. Although expected to be the staff ace from the first day of practice, Munn struggled throughout the first half of the year.

``None of my pitches were working; I was forced to throw fastballs,'' he said. ``People were teeing off on it. Now I have the offspeed and curve and I can mix it up. It used to be fastball, fastball, fastball.''

The results were evident in Munn's strikeout strike·out

Munn has 56 strikeouts in 39 innings this season.

The improvements came from hard work in the bullpen, where he relearned his curve. He now relies on it as his out pitch.

``I knew if I wasn't going to get pitches over sooner or later, it was going to be a long season,'' Munn said.

The season will go longer on a positive note if Munn's curve is on against Damien.

``I just want to go as far as I can; I've never gotten a shot at this,'' he said.

Needle and thread, please: Hart, which defeated Arroyo 13-3 in the first round of the playoffs on Friday, might be without left fielder Marke Horvat for its second-round game against Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  today.

Coach Bud Murray was to learn Horvat's status at practice on Monday. The junior cut his hand severely during Friday's game. He was leading off at first, dived back to the bag to beat a pickoff pick·off

``That big first baseman blocked him off the base and got called for obstruction,'' Murray said. ``He should have got kicked out. The umpire thought it was an accident, but it wasn't.''

Deciding which pitcher to start in the first-round game had to be enjoyable for Murray. Pitching was Hart's weakness last year, when it lost 9-7 in the first round. Justin Wiley (10-1) and Shields (6-0) were considered, but Murray went with Wiley, the senior, because of his work this season.

``He's not as talented as Jamie, but he's really consistent,'' Murray said.

Shields will bring his season total of 83 strikeouts in 46-2/3 innings into today's game.
