PREMARK UPDATES SECOND QUARTER OUTLOOK

DEERFIELD, Ill., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Premark International, Inc. (NYSE: PMI) disclosed today that its Tupperware U.S. unit will report a profit in the second quarter due to stronger sales and lower costs. Premark's overall net income will be up significantly from $29.4 million, or 89 cents per share, last year and should be near the higher end of leading analyst estimates.
"Tupperware U.S. is returning to profitability faster than we anticipated and should be operating around breakeven for the first half," said Premark Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Warren L. Batts. "We've increased the size of the sales force with greater emphasis on recruiting, and we're using promotions more effectively. These short term efforts should increase second quarter sales by about 10 percent. The higher sales volume along with savings from cost reduction actions initiated last year will result in a second quarter profit for Tupperware U.S. While longer term challenges remain, our recent performance is encouraging."
In other Premark segments, momentum in Tupperware Europe is more than offsetting difficulties in the Asia Pacific region, and the Food Equipment Group continues to expect soft markets in Europe through the end of the year. Significant warranty costs at Ralph Wilson Plastics are overshadowing progress in the Decorative Products Group, while the West Bend business continues to improve.
"Overall, we're encouraged by our prospects but mindful of the uncertain economies in several of our markets," said Batts.
Premark is a $2.9 billion multinational company that markets premium products under leading brand names such as Tupperware, Hobart, Vulcan, Wilsonart, Florida Tile, Hartco, West Bend, and Precor. Premark stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and London Stock Exchanges.
