PRELIMINARY DISCUSSIONS ABOUT POSSIBLE ASHLAND COAL AND ARCH MINERAL BUSINESS COMBINATION BEING HELD

 HUNTINGTON, W.Va., and ST. LOUIS, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Ashland Coal, Inc. (NYSE: ACI) and Arch Mineral Corporation announced today that they are engaged in preliminary discussions about a possible business combination of the two entities.
 The companies are only in the investigative stage of the evaluation and there can be no assurance a combination of the companies will take place.
 Ashland Coal, Inc., based in Huntington, is engaged in the mining, processing and sale of low-sulfur coal and markets its coal principally to electric utilities in the eastern United States and into the export markets.
 Arch Mineral Corporation mines and markets bituminous coal through its independent, wholly owned subsidiaries in Wyoming, Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. Arch Mineral is headquartered in suburban St. Louis.
