City Park because she wants to make sure it is safe for her baby, who is due next month.

``Since it is our first child we have no experience putting together a car seat,'' said Rickert. ``For my own reassurance REASSURANCE. When an insurer is desirous of lessening his liability, he may procure some other insurer to insure him from loss, for the insurance he has made this is called reassurance. , I would feel better if somebody else who knew what they were doing put the car seat in for me.''

Rickert was among dozens of parents who brought car seats to the checkup sponsored by the Lancaster Sheriff's Station and an organization called SafetyBeltSafe USA.

Twenty volunteers checked each seat to make sure it was facing the right direction and was fastened properly with the car seat belt. They also examined each seat for cracks or broken pieces and checked model numbers against a list of recalled seats.

``We are trying to give them (parents) the best information that we can to provide safe transportation for their children,'' said sheriff's Deputy Theresa Dawson, who was one of the checkers checkers, game for two players, known in England as draughts. It is played on a square board, divided into 64 alternately colored—usually red and black or white and black—square spaces, identical with a chessboard. . ``The best car seat, if not properly installed, could cause severe harm to a child if involved in an accident.''

Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for children, said Sheryll Bolton, a child passenger safety technician See PC technician and software technician.  for SafetyBeltSafe USA.

Even when parents put their child in a safety seat, too often the seats are fastened incorrectly, she said.

Bolton said she has inspected about 8,000 seats. All but five needed at least some adjustment, she said.

Sometimes the car seats are facing the wrong way or are placed in the wrong seat. Sometimes children aren't fastened into the seat properly. Sometimes the seat has been recalled or is fastened to the car incorrectly.

Safety checks like Tuesday's are important, said sheriff's Sgt. Gus Risinger.

``At this point, I think the citizens demand that they have something like this,'' Risinger said

SafetyBeltSafe USA instructors trained the volunteers Monday in an eight-hour session that included about 40 different car seats.

Tuesday's inspections took about 20 minutes for each car. The volunteers - usually four to a car - showed parents how to fasten in the seat correctly, then had the parents do it themselves.

One parent said she appreciated the checkup.

``I had been asking sheriff's when they're going to do something like this,'' said Margie Wert, who had two car seats inspected. ``It's been a concern of mine ever since my son was born.''
