PRAXAIR & RECOVERY TECHNOLOGIES TEAM ON SCRAP TIRE GRINDING

DANBURY, Conn., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX) and Recovery Technologies Inc. (RTI) today announced they will cooperatively market liquid nitrogen supply and cryogenic scrap tire recovery systems. The systems operate on low power, use nitrogen efficiently, and are less maintenance intensive than alternative systems. They also produce a cleaner, finer-mesh, and yield a higher-value, more saleable ground rubber end product.
Over 275 million tires are scrapped per year in North America. Recycled ground rubber from those scrap tires can be used for playground surfaces, carpet padding, brake linings, roof and roadway sealants and artificial turf.
In addition, the 1992 ISTEA (Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act) mandates using five percent ground rubber in asphalt for road construction by 1994, growing to 20 percent by 1997.
When enforced, the Act will create a demand sufficient to recycle nearly three billion scrap tires now stockpiled across North America, and it will help eliminate the health and safety hazards associated with these stockpiles.
Recovery Technologies Inc. is the only company in North and South America offering commercially proven turnkey cryogenic whole tire recycling systems, which it builds in Canada for installation worldwide. The company owns and operates a state-of-the art facility in Cambridge, Ontario, that processes one million scrap tires per year. RTI also has sold systems in Italy, Mexico and Switzerland, and is completing projects in Scotland, Mexico and Korea.
Praxair, Inc. offers 25 years of experience in using the -320 deg.F (-195.8 deg.C) liquid nitrogen cryogen for tire grinding. Praxair is the largest industrial gases supplier in North and South America, and one of the largest worldwide, with 1992 annual sales of $2.6 billion. The company also is a leading worldwide supplier of ceramic and metallic coatings and powders.
