PRATT & WHITNEY BEGINS TESTING INCREASED THRUST F100 ENGINE
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney has begun ground testing a higher thrust model of the F100 engine that now powers F-15 and F-16 aircraft. Designated the IPE-94, the engine provides greduction engines.
The engine uses a larger-diameter, wide-chord fan and higher-temperature turbine hardware to produce up to 20 percent more thrust than the current production model, the F100-PW-229.
The IPE-94 is being tested in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force at Pratt & Whitney's Florida test facility. It will be available in 1997 as a performance upgrade for F-15Es, F-16C/Ds and for advanced applications. The IPE-94 will have a thrust-to-weight ratio in excess of 9.5-to-1, compared with 8-to-1 for today's PW-229.
During upcoming weeks Pratt & Whitney expects to gradually increase the thrust on the highly instrumented test engine to gather and analyze test data using a program similar to that developed for the highly successful F100-PW-220. The engine is expected to run at 36,000 pounds of thrust in late November or early December.
More than 5,500 Pratt & Whitney F100 engines power the majority of the world's F-16 fleet and all F-15s. The F100 has set the highest safety and reliability standards of any fighter engine ever operated by the Air Force.
Pratt & Whitney's Government Engines & Space Propulsion unit, based in West Palm Beach, Fla., designs, develops and supports government jet engines, rockets and space systems. Pratt & Whitney is a unit of United Technologies Corporation.
