PRATT & WHITNEY ANNOUNCEMENT: F-15 SALE TO SAUDI ARABIA
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- "We are extremely pleased with today's announcement," said John P. Balaguer, president of Pratt & Whitney's (P&W) Government Engines & Space Propulsion unit, in response to President Bush's authorization today of the sale of up to 72 F-15 aircraft to Saudi Arabia. "We have a long standing relationship with McDonnell Douglas and Saudi Arabia and look forward to continuing to provide safe and reliable power for this country's F-15s," he added.
Pratt & Whitney is expected to power the proposed aircraft, since its F100 remains the engine of choice for 100 percent of the F-15s operational worldwide. The order is expected to be for 165 engines, including spares, with a potential value in excess of $600 million.
The order from Saudi Arabia coupled with the recently announced order for F-16s from Taiwan would help preserve jobs on the F100 manufacturing line until late in the decade. Approximately 1,500 P&W employees currently are employed in the F100 program.
While details of the sale are yet to be worked out between the United States and Saudi Arabia, it is projected that engine deliveries will begin in 1994 with aircraft deliveries in 1995.
