PPG INDUSTRIES TO PRODUCE SILICAS IN NETHERLANDS

PITTSBURGH, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chemicals Group of PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) announced it has acquired an idle Netherlands catalyst plant and will convert it to production of precipitated amorphous silicas.
The plant was acquired from UOP B.V., a subsidiary of UOP, a Des Plaines, Ill., joint venture of Allied-Signal Inc. (NYSE: ALD) and Union Carbide Corp. (NYSE: UK). Terms were not disclosed.
The facility at Delfzijl, near Groningen in the northern Netherlands, formerly produced fluid catalysts for UOP B.V.'s Katalistiks unit. It will have an annual silicas production capacity in excess of 10,000 metric tons when PPG Chemicals B.V. begins its operation later this year.
"This silicas plant in Europe -- PPG's first -- will enable us to better serve our European customers and to meet their expanding needs," said David B. Church, PPG's general manager of silicas. "The acquisition also fits our strategy of directly participating in the European market with on-site facilities," he added.
PPG has applied to Dutch authorities for permits to start operations, Church said, and has further meetings scheduled with government officials to advance that process.
The PPG Chemicals B.V. plant's initial work force will be 25-30 people, with additional employment as business expands.
The company plans initial production of several grades of Hi-Sil proprietary silicas, including those used to make microporous membranes for automotive and telephone batteries and as carriers for other chemicals.
PPG's Chemicals Group, whose annual sales exceed $1 billion, has silica products operations, wholly-owned or through joint ventures, in the United States, Taiwan, China and Thailand. Other Chemicals Group European operations manufacture surfactants and paper chemicals in France, and surfactants in England.
Pittsburgh-based PPG is also a major producer in Europe of coatings, glass, fiber glass and medical electronics.
