PPG INDUSTRIES TEAMS UP WITH DISTRIBUTOR TO AID DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS IN MIDWEST

PITTSBURGH, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) is donating 40,000 pounds of granular calcium hypochlorite to assist the relief effort for flood victims in Iowa, it was announced today.
Calcium hypochlorite is a chlorinating compound widely used to disinfect water for drinking. The amount donated by PPG Industries is enough to disinfect more than 1 billion gallons of drinking water. Calcium hypochlorite is also used in higher concentrations as a sanitizer and disinfectant.
"We are proud to be a part of the rehabilitation process being led by the local, state and federal emergency assistance agencies," said Donna Magill, general manager of PPG's calcium hypochlorite business unit.
Magill said that Harcros Chemicals, one of PPG's independent distributors, approached PPG with a request for the chemical. Harcros, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., will coordinate the distribution of the PPG shipment and assist disaster relief agencies with training, safety and usage procedures.
Iowa is facing a severe water shortage following several weeks of intensive rains. Flooding damage to a major water treatment plant in Des Moines, Iowa, crippled the city's ability to purify water for public use. As a result of the plant's inactivity, more than 250,000 people are without water throughout the state. Emergency authorities estimate the water crisis may extend for as long as 30 days, until equipment at the water treatment plant can be cleaned and disinfected.
The shipments of calcium hypochlorite are targeted for Des Moines and Davenport, Iowa, cities where the demand for water is deemed most great. The chemicals are produced at and shipped from PPG's plant at Natrium, W.Va.
According to Magill, emergency officials will prioritize the distribution of the chemical to the specific locations with the greatest need. She also noted that PPG is working with all of its independent distributors which serve areas along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to help them prepare their emergency responses as the flood crests move down river.
PPG Industries is a global producer of chemicals, flat glass, fiberglass, coatings and resins and medical electronics.
