PPG HAS AUTO COATINGS AGREEMENTS FOR CHINA, JAPAN
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) said

today its Coatings and Resins Group has formed a venture with a Hong Kong firm to market automotive original equipment coatings in China and signed an agreement with a Japanese company to distribute PPG auto refinishes in Japan.
"PPG has supplied automotive and industrial coatings in the Asia-Pacific region for several years," said Richard M. Rompala, PPG group vice president, coatings and resins. "Because Japan is the world's largest manufacturer of automobiles and auto production in China continues to grow rapidly, it is essential that PPG develop a stronger presence in both countries to better service our customers there, and to grow as a global supplier."
PPG and Hoi Tung Marine Machinery Suppliers Co. Ltd. of Hong Kong formed PPG-Hoi Tung Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong, in which PPG holds 60 percent equity. Rompala said products supplied to vehicle producers in China will initially be manufactured by a Hoi Tung subsidiary in Shekou, China, from materials supplied by PPG. The PPG-Hoi Tung venture will explore the feasibility of building a manufacturing facility in China to increase local materials content and further expand customer service, he added.
Hoi Tung is a subsidiary of China Merchants Holdings Co. Ltd. of Hong Kong. It produces marine and heavy duty paint, makes equipment and provides related engineering services.
Isamu Paint Co. Ltd. of Osaka will distribute PPG auto refinishes in Japan. It has manufactured and distributed refinish products there for more than 40 years.
Rompala said Isamu was the first Japanese paintmaker to introduce polyurethane coatings to the Japanese auto refinish market. "Isamu is developing entire paint systems for refinishers, including computerized color-matching and costing programs." he said. "Deltron refinish coatings by PPG are among the best in the world, and will give Isamu the opportunity to improve overall quality of refinish products for Japan. The agreement brings together PPG's technical and product expertise and Isamu's distribution capabilities."
PPG is the world's largest maker of automotive and industrial coatings. It has produced coatings in North America for nearly a century and in Europe for more than 20 years. PPG has been manufacturing auto coatings in Pusan, South Korea, since 1986, and last year announced formation of joint-venture Shinnikka PPG Co. Ltd. to manufacture and market industrial coatings in Japan.
PPG is also a global producer of flat glass, continuous strand fiber glass, chemicals and medical electronics.
