PP nanocomposites arrive for automotive parts.

A new polypropylene nanocomposite compound is available as a cost-effective alternative to more highly filled traditional materials, such as glass-reinforced PP used in automotive applications. Called Forte. it was launched last month by specialty compounder Noble Polymers of Grand Rapids Grand Rapids, city (1990 pop. 189,126), seat of Kent co., SW central Mich., on the Grand River; inc. 1850. The second largest city in the state, it is a distribution, wholesale, and industrial center for an area that yields fruit, dairy products, farm produce, , Mich., a division of injection molder Cascade Engineering. After two years of joint development with Cascade, Forte is making its commercial debut in the seat backs of Acura 2004 passenger cars.

Forte reportedly offers low density (0.928 g/cc), superior mechanical properties, and improved surface quality. Working with Acura, Cascade found that the originally specified glass-filled PP was causing processing problems, visual detects and warping. Forte was developed as a replacement. In testing by Noble, Cascade, and Acura, Forte compounds consistently improved the strength and reduced the weight and cost of parts, Noble reports. Improved recyclability is also said to result.

The nanocomposite comes in two grades. Forte 18CPP cpp - C preprocessor. 091 is medium-flow grade with a tangent flex modulus of 260,724 psi and 2% secant secant, in mathematics.

1 In geometry, a secant is a straight line cutting a curve or surface. If it intersects the curve in two different points, as in the secant of a circle, the segment of the secant between the points is called a chord.
