POWERSOFT INTRODUCES CODE FOR CLIENT/SERVER PRODUCT INTEROPERABILITY
BURLINGTON, Mass., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Powersoft Corporation introduced today the details of its Client/Server Open Development Environment (CODE) strategy to enrich the capabilities of its PowerBuilder product and services and to promote -- as an industry leader -- the concepts of client/server as a market-driven, open-systems computing paradigm.
As part of its CODE strategy, Powersoft has recently made public several vendor-complementary relationships, including one announced today to support Microsoft's Windows NT operating system and its Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) initiative. Powersoft also announced earlier this month, relationships with CASE-vendors Bachman and LBMS as part of its solution to provide the market with CASE interfaces for client/server architectures.
Powersoft President David Litwack noted, "CODE articulates the principles by which Powersoft will remaing a leader and strong voice in the rapidly growing client/server market. It lays out our strategy to provide as many open solutions as possible for the development and deployment of robust corporate applications."
Today's Powersoft announcement of support for Windows NT and ODBC is part of the CODE blueprint for increasing PowerBuilder's product capabilities and market breadth. This applies to both its application development functions and its intelligent interfaces to other client/server products made possible by vendor-complementary partnerships in the following client/server market areas:
 -- Database Interfaces, including ALLBASE/SQL, DB2, INFORMIX,
ORACLE, SQLBase, SQL Server, XBD, and ODBC
-- Multiple GUI Interfaces, currently a Windows product,
PowerBuilder is committed to supporting all major platforms
-- CASE Interfaces, including BACHMAN and LBMS
-- Host Interfaces, to a variety of terminal emulator APIs
-- Object Library Interfaces, currently to PowerBuilder's library,
eventually to version control and configuration management
 products
-- Other Server Interfaces, including mail, document, image and
 graphics
-- Desktop Application Interfaces, through Windows DDE (Dynamic
Data Exchange), OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), and DDLs
 (Dynamic Link Libraries) functions
-- Worldwide Training, Consulting, and Product Support
Characterized by three functional components -- client, network, and server -- client/server architectures incorporate multiple products and technologies. For the client/server market to be successful, products designed for each element of the platform must be interoperable, scalable, adaptable and affordable.
This will enable users to mix-and-match products within their client/server solutions based on specific economy and performance needs for each of the three client/server components. According to Powersoft, this will only occur by means of a community of "good vendor citizens" who promote open systems through standard interfaces to the other components of the platform.
Powersoft is a privately-held company that develops and markets the object-oriented PowerBuilder client/server development system for mission-critical Windows applications. As of Oct. 15, PowerBuilder was in use at 1,700 corporate sites for the development and deployment of client/server applications.
