POWER-ONE OF CAMARILLO TO BUY SWISS COMPANIES.

To expand its product line and overseas distribution, electronic components manufacturer Power-One Inc. said Tuesday it will buy a group of Swiss companies This is a list of Swiss companies, currently active and former ones:

Under terms of the agreement, Power-One will pay $42 million cash and take on $11 million in existing debt to acquire Melcher Group. Melcher, which makes DC power converters, had 1997 sales of $42 million, most from European customers. Power-One makes AC/DC AC/DC

Both Power-One's and Melcher's products are used in consumer electronics such as VCRs and personal computers. In a computer, an AC/DC power supply takes electricity from a wall outlet and converts it to a form the machine can use. A DC-to-DC converter of the sort Melcher makes then takes the power and adjusts its voltage to levels for individual components, such as disk drives.

Trading in Power-One shares was halted prior to Tuesday's announcement. The company's shares closed down $0.125 at $7.625.
