POWER and Arthur D. Little today announced the winners of the annual Chairman's Choice Awards. The awards distinguish new products using power supply or power management technology that represent a significant leap forward in the evolution of the wireless industry.

The awards recognize leading work in two categories: R&D Technology and Components. Dr. Brian Barnett, Vice President and Director of Applied Chemistry and Battery Industry Studies at Arthur D. Little, Inc., presented the awards, during POWER 2000, the Eighth Annual International Conference on Power Requirements for Mobile Computing and Wireless Communications, in San Diego, California.

The R&D Technology Award was presented to Dallas Semiconductor for the Integral Bump Technology Sense Resistor, Dallas Semiconductor's DS2760 High-Precision Li-Ion Battery Monitor uses a new, patented technology that eliminates the cost and area liability of the current sense resistor needed for high-precision coulomb counting. The DS2760 contains a sense resistor that is formed on top of the dice using basic semiconductor metalization techniques during the flip chip fabrication process. NESS Corporation was awarded the Components Award for their EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor), also known as an ultracapacitor, an exciting new technology that will allow many new portable and hand-held electronic products to become smaller, lighter, more efficient, and less expensive to operate. The technology has widespread application to a variety of industries and has been recognized throughout the electronics community as a key component for the future of electronics.

Nominations were submitted by OEMs, battery manufacturers, makers of components, microelectronics, and sub-systems, and members of the press. The award winners were selected by the POWER 2000 Executive Review Board. The Components Award and R&D Technology Award were determined by the following criteria: the product was commercially available in a wireless communications or mobile computing device, represented a technological innovation and a bold step forward in implementing state-of-the-art and/or power management functionality, and it was released during the last year or in Beta Test by the opening of the Power 2000 conference, held earlier this month.
