If you were waiting for that ``universal'' personal computer, the wait is over. Apple's Power Macintosh See Power Mac.

(computer) Power Macintosh - Apple Computer's personal computer based on the PowerPC, introduced on 1994-03-14. Existing 680x0 code (both applications and device drivers) run on Power Macintosh systems without modification via a Motorola 68LC040 emulator.
 7200/120 PC Compatible runs everything.

I mean everything. Not only does it run Macintosh software This list of Macintosh software reveals prominent Mac OS computer programs. Since the library of Mac OS programs is unmanageable, this list is confined to those programs for which a Wikipedia article exists. , it runs IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  software, and it runs it as fast as a comparably equipped PC.

That's because inside this Macintosh beat two hearts. One is the Macintosh PowerPC 601 microprocessor, running at a blazing 120 megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz.

MegaHertz - (MHz) Millions of cycles per second. The unit of frequency used to measure the clock rate of modern digital logic, including microprocessors.
. The other is a 100 megahertz Pentium chip.

The standard features - like quad speed CD-ROM See 4x CD-ROM.  drive, 1.2 gigabyte hard drive, 3.5-inch floppy, networking (LocalTalk and Ethernet) and built-in video support for displays up to 21 inches - work for both the Mac and PC sides.

So how does this Macintosh run IBM software? A single card that contains the electronics of an entire PC comes plugged into one of the Mac's three new, faster PCI slots. This PC compatibility card includes the Pentium processor along with 8 MB of memory (expandable to 72 MB), Sound Blaster 16-bit CD-quality sound and lots more.

And not only can you run both platforms, you can run both of them at the same time. For example, you could be running a word-processor program like Microsoft Word in Windows 95 and simultaneously be running a spreadsheet or communications program on the Macintosh.

In addition, you can transfer information to and from the Macintosh and PC platforms via cut-and-paste.
