POWER'S IN THE POWDER; CHILI WIZARDS' CONCOCTIONS COMPETE IN QUEST FOR FIRE.

The secret to good chili (language) CHILI - D.L. Abt. A language for systems programming, based on ALGOL 60 with extensions for structures and type declarations.

lies in the chili powder, said Jeff Bayly, whose chili competed for attention and prizes at Sunday's chili cook-off for Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  Days.

The overall taste of a batch of chili depends on how many ingredients the chef uses and when they're tossed into the mix, said Bayly of the J and J Chili stand. ``There's so many variables,'' he said.

Each of the dozens of booths at Conejo Creek Park held at least one giant pot of rust-colored chili, bubbling over a hot flame. Hungry chili lovers were tempted to challenge their taste buds taste buds taste nplGeschmacksknospen pl  with chili concoctions with names like Graveyard, Texas Chainsaw, Mudslide, Fire in the Hole, Rat Shack, Dragonsbreath and President's Choice President's Choice (or "PC") is the private label brand of Loblaw Companies Limited, the largest food retailer in Canada. The PC brand includes a wide variety of food, drinks and consumer products, and services, such as President's Choice Financial services. .

Musical performers belted out blues, ska, rock and country tunes through the air, which was already thick with sweet smoke.

The trick is to find a combination that makes your chili stand out from the rest when the judges come around, Bayly said.

``You've got to think of some way to hook them,'' he said. ``You want to catch them with some flavor.''

Dave Thomas, who staffed the Crazy Horse Chili stand, said he once experimented with peanut butter in a chili recipe. He agreed that the secret is finding a good chili powder and basing the other flavors around it.

``Anyone can make a chili hot,'' Thomas said. ``The trick is to make it taste good.''

A good pot of chili will immediately grab the attention of the judges' senses, he said.

``It has to smell good,'' Thomas said. ``That's the first thing that gets your taste buds excited.''

No two batches of chili are alike, even though most contain similar ingredients, Glenn Crites said.

``All the ingredients are basically the same, so it's the individual style of the cook,'' he said.

``I go through and look at what other people have done and do my own experimentation,'' Crites said.

Some organizations used their chili booths to recruit new members.
