POWELL INDUSTRIES, INC. ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT FOR SUBSIDIARY

 HOUSTON, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Powell Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: POWL) today announced that Thomas C. Burtnett has been elected to succeed H.C. "Hank" Schmidt as president of Unibus, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary.
 Unibus, located in Strongsville, Ohio, near Cleveland, designs, manufactures and sells segregated and non-segregated bus duct and cable duct for the commercial, industrial and utility electrical power distribution markets.
 Burtnett has over 27 years experience in the electrical power equipment industry, including 12 years in the design and manufacture of bus duct and bus systems. He has held various technical management positions for the past 20 years and joins Unibus after 12 years with Cooper Power Systems Division of Cooper Industries, as engineering manager of the Kyle Distribution Switchgear operation. He is a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in electrical engineering.
 Schmidt, 64, is retiring after a career that has included assignments with General Electric, Powell Electrical Manufacturing Co. and Unibus.
 "During his tenure as president of Unibus, Hank made significant contributions to the success of Unibus," said Thomas W. Powell, chairman and chief executive officer of Powell Industries. "Hank told us that he wanted to retire several months ago. While we regretted his decision, we are thankful that he agreed to stay with us until a qualified successor could be identified."
 Powell Industries, Inc. designs, manufactures and packages electrical generation, distribution and control equipment.
