POTENT VALENCIA RELOADS CANYON, SAUGUS TO CONTEND IN FOOTHILL.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

When the Valencia High boys' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  team said goodbye to outside hitter Tony Ker after wrapping up its second successive Southern Section Div. II championship last year, the rest of the Foothill League did a little celebrating.

Ker, now at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, was that good.

and Tony Ker, and I'm going to be in just about every match I play,'' Canyon coach Dave Gutierrez said. ``He was an extremely effective player. That's a pretty big loss for them.''

Gutierrez isn't about to underestimate Valencia, the four-time defending league champion. He knows the Vikings have talented middle blocker Teddy Goetz patrolling the middle and that they'll promote a handful of juniors who won 59 games in a row on the junior-varsity team the past two years.

Those juniors spent the summer forming the core of the 16-under junior national champion Synergy The enhanced result of two or more people, groups or organizations working together. ``They're going to be as good as ever,'' Gutierrez said.

Nonetheless, Canyon and Saugus sense a window of opportunity opening with Ker no longer around.

Saugus has its biggest team in years, led by 6-foot-7 middle blocker Sam (1) (Security Accounts Manager) The part of Windows NT that manages the database of usernames, passwords and permissions. There have been several important people by the name of John Murray (roughly in chronological order):
  • John Murray of Falahill, a Scottish outlaw
  • John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl (1660-1724)
and middle blockers Brandon Pank and Chris Renfrow.

``We don't think Valencia is untouchable untouchable

,'' Saugus coach Zach Ambrose said. ``Obviously, we won't know until we play them, but, mentally, we feel like we can play with them, and that's pretty important.''

Gutierrez agrees.

``We've played (Valencia) tough the last two years, so we know we can stay close to them,'' Gutierrez said. ``This year, we want to do more than just stay close, and we feel we are capable of doing that. We want to beat them.''

The Vikings appear up to the challenge. With junior Kevin Ker and sophomore James Ker - Tony's younger brothers Wiki is aware of the following uses of "'Younger Brother":
  • Younger Brother (music group)
  • Younger Brother (Trinity House) - a title within the British organisation, Trinity House
 - and Goetz, Valencia is expected to contend for the league title and another Southern Section championship.

What Valencia lacks in varsity experience - Goetz is its most seasoned player - it more than makes for in club experience and junior-varsity success.

``(The JV players) know how to win,'' Valencia coach Mark Knudsen said. ``They're accustomed to having success. Now they need to translate that to the varsity level.''

Middle blocker Stephen Cornelius and left-side hitter Sean Carter are among the juniors the Vikings will lean on.

``We feel like we have a deep, talented team,'' Knudsen said.

Hart, behind outside hitter Alex Strickland, might struggle early but could compete for a playoff play·off also play-off
