POT FARM DESTROYED IN FOREST NEAR OJAI.

Byline: Ann-Marie Sanchez Daily News Staff Writer

As deputies uprooted the latest marijuana cache discovered in Ventura County's rugged back country, sheriff's officials vowed Monday to step up efforts to undercut undercut,

Sheriff's Capt. Bruce Hansen said that law enforcement officials are particularly concerned about the safety of campers and hunters who might stumble upon armed marijuana growers, especially during harvest time Noun 1. harvest time - the season for gathering crops

``This area is for people who want to use it for camping, hunting and other recreational activities. Families and hunters don't need to be approached by armed marijuana farmers protecting their crops,'' Hansen said.

Sheriff's officials plan to release details of their enforcement plan Thursday.

On Monday morning, narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required.  agents pulled up and destroyed 3,027 marijuana plants worth an estimated $12 million near the Wheeler Gorge Campground, north of Ojai.

A day earlier, Ventura County narcotics investigators arrested 10 men suspected of cultivating the illegal crop, which included plants as tall as 14 feet, Hansen said.

A deer hunter reported the illegal garden two weeks ago after he was confronted by an armed man while walking along a trail.

``The man told him, `You don't want to go any further, and there's nothing up there for you to see,' '' Hansen said.

Sheriff's officials kept the garden under surveillance before making the arrests Sunday.

The names of the suspects, whom police said were armed with handguns and rifles and claimed to be hunters, were not released pending filing of charges. All 10 had identification and hunting licenses at the time of their arrest, Hansen said.

``We're still trying to make that determination (if the men are involved), but they were found in fairly close proximity to this grow,'' Hansen said. ``There were other things about this group that also raised our suspicion.''

More than 20 narcotics agents from the Sheriff's Department, Oxnard Police Department, U.S. Forest Service and the FBI assisted Monday in uprooting the crop, which was to be burned.

The growers had cleared oak trees and brush for the crops and used hoses to draw water from a creek near the marijuana farm, according to according to
