And the packages arrived just in the nick of time, said Lawrence. ``It was a really pleasant surprise,'' she said. ``I'm glad the package got here today; it made it worth the effort.'' The package was a last-minute gift for her daughter-in-law, she said. She took a chance and ordered merchandise over the Internet because it seemed the only guaranteed way she could have the gift delivered by Christmas Day. ``I think it's fun the mailman got dressed as Santa,'' she said. ``I've never seen them do it before, but it's a lot of fun and it's a good way to make the best out of his work.'' Larry Pellegrin, a second-year mail carrier at the Glendale post office, said he got a kick out of wearing the costume and seeing the reaction from residents. ``I wouldn't mind wearing the suit all year round,'' he said. ``People were really friendly with me and I enjoy that.'' He volunteered to wear the suit after finding out that he would be delivering express mail packages on Christmas Day. ``If you're going to deliver packages on Christmas, they're probably gifts, so you might as well have fun and give people a little something special with their gifts,'' he said. Pellegrin himself got a pleasant surprise when he delivered an overnight envelope to Glendale resident Walter Calmette. Calmette was so pleased to receive his Christmas bonus check on time from his East Coast employer, that he presented Santa with a little stuffed Felix the Cat This article is about the cartoon character. Calmette wasn't the only one who enjoyed seeing Santa. As Pellegrin drove his postal truck along the route, surprised pedestrians and drivers were quick to wave at him. And while Pellegrin, 46, said he had never dressed up as Santa Claus before, the experience was so satisfying that he might consider doing it again if the opportunity were to arise.
