POSTAL SERVICE PRESENTS BLUE SHIELD WITH EXCELLENCE AWARD

 CAMP HILL, Pa., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Saving more than $2.4 million through innovative postage handling in 1992 has earned Pennsylvania Blue Shield the "Award of Excellence" from the United States Postal Service.
 The nation's largest Blue Shield Plan has been was recognized for its handling of approximately 47 million pieces of mail in 1992, and its productive working relationship with the Postal Service.
 Pennsylvania Blue Shield is the only company in central Pennsylvania to receive the award.
 "We're very pleased to be recognized by the Postal Service for this very major segment of our operations," said Margaret Lanshe, vice president, Private Business Claims of Blue Shield. "Receiving this award confirms our longtime commitment to quality and saving our subscribers' premium dollars." The company saved more than 12 percent of its postage costs by taking advantage of postal incentives during 1992.
 Blue Shield has made aggressive steps to enhance its mail operations in recent years, including the implementation of "Zip+4" in 1985. Prebarcoding of outgoing mail has resulted in significant postage savings for the company, along with other new programs that enhance quality and save costs.
 "Our employees are obviously a major factor in Blue Shield receiving this award," said Lanshe. "They have been active participants in the Capital Area Postal Customer Council, and attend Postal Service workshops and training sessions regularly to keep abreast of postal programs.
 "We've also realized excellent results from prebarcoding our business Reply and Courtesy Reply mail," she said, adding that the insurer has been taken the lead in the Postal Service's Automation program. "Obviously, this is a major component of our day-to-day operations. When your mail volume is the size of ours, you had better take quality and efficiency as serious matters. It's a constant priority here at Blue Shield." In 1989, the Postal service awarded Blue Shield its own Camp Hill ZIP Code in response to its high mail volume.
 The award was presented by representatives of the Postal Service's Harrisburg District at Blue Shield's Camp Hill headquarters.
 As the state's largest health insurer, Pennsylvania Blue Shield processed more than 100 million pieces Private Business and Medicare Part B claims in 1992.
