POST-CHRISTMAS MALL HAUL SHOPPERS HIT STORES EN MASSE FOR SALES OF THE SEASON.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

PANORAMA CITY - James Higgins James Higgins was a first class cricketer who played 9 matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1901 to 1905. He also appeared for Yorkshire Second XI (1901-1905), Yorkshire Colts (1900-1902) and Yorkshire Cricket Council (1903).  had simple hopes for his post-Christmas shopping, as he stood Sunday before big-screen TVs at the Panorama Mall and looked for an item worth buying.

``Something to catch my eye. Something for my wife but also something that catches my eye at decent prices,'' said Higgins, 38, who works in telephone sales.

Other shoppers seemed to have similar ideas, as they lined up for on-sale items or exchanged presents they did not want. A line at La Curacao in the Panorama Mall snaked through the store and ended in the store's toy department out of sight of the cash registers.

But none of that discouraged shoppers such as Laura Alcala, 50, of San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

Security manager Jayson Lavalleur said the mall was about twice as busy as it normally is on Sunday mornings Sunday Morning may refer to:

Nationwide, merchants are finding themselves in the same position they were in last year, relying on the final days before Christmas and post-holiday sales to save the season.

Last year, a late spending surge gave struggling retailers a better-than-expected holiday season, delivering solid gains over the year-ago period. In 2002, however, the last-minute boost was not sufficient to overcome December's earlier weakness.

``The holiday season will be told on how many gift cards get redeemed in the week after Christmas, versus how many wait until January and February,'' said Ellen Tolley, a spokeswoman for the National Retail Federation.

Gift cards, which have been increasingly popular among holiday shoppers, are recorded as sales only when they are redeemed.

The association estimated $17.24 billion worth - or roughly about 8 percent of holiday sales - will be sold in gift cards this season, the Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency.

At the Panorama Mall on Sunday, Wenda Rodigues, 17, and her parents were there to take advantage of a one-per-person sale on irons and juice-makers. Each of the three bought an iron for less than $2 and a juice-maker for less than $10.

``It was worth it,'' Wenda said.

Sylvia Mendoza, 31, of Van Nuys was less happy with the sales.

``We never shop here but today we are shopping because they say that the sales are extraordinary, perfect ... I don't think so,'' said Mendoza, who works as an accountant.

Still, Mendoza picked up a Monopoly game for $10 and planned to buy a hair dryer at the same price.

Higgins, who was shopping with his son Elijah Ruiz, said the crush of shoppers could have been worse.

``Even though it looks bad, it was chaos in here the day before (Christmas),'' Higgins said.
