Looking for stories recently, I called the Glendale Community College sports office and asked which teams were practicing. Alex Leon, a spokesman, suggested I hit the baseball field between 1 and 4 p.m. any day of the week and I would catch the Vaqueros in action.

With my camera and telephoto lens in tow, I went to the field, introduced myself to the coach, Chris Cicuto and he gave me access to the team. I set my camera to auto focus and continuous shooting mode, stood near the dugout off the third base line and began snapping away.

You can see the results from one of my shots on the cover. It turns out that the guy in the photo, Brian Bistagne, had a heck of a weekend in the team's less-than-stellar opening tournament. He had 10 hits in four games.

I talked recently with coach Chris Cicuto about how the Vaqueros did over the weekend at the South Coast Tournament at El Camino. The news was grim. They played four games. And went 0-4.

``Tough pitching,'' the coach told me as he threw the team's laundry from the weekend slaughter into the wash. ``We definitely played defense well. We pitched well.''

There weren't too many runs. I asked Chris what the team was going to work on this week in their run-up to their second upcoming tournament, the Western State Conference Tournament.

He laughed, then said, hitting balls.
