POST OFFICE NOW OPEN EVERY DAY THROUGH CHRISTMAS.
Hoping to keep traffic at the main Lancaster post office flowing freely, postal officials have increased hours and days of service.
Now through Christmas, the Lancaster post office at 1008 W. Ave. J-2 will be open every day.
``Opening up the post office on a Sunday, we're hoping to get those people who want to buy stamps who would otherwise come in on Monday,'' said Terri Bouffiou, U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman. ``That's what happened the last few years.''
The post office will be open 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and Dec. 20, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Dec. 21. Regular hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
``Our busiest two days are Monday, Dec. 14 and Monday, Dec. 21,'' said Bouffiou. ``Over the weekend - we're hoping - everybody will do their Christmas shopping and buy their Christmas cards and write them all out.''
Officials said people should mail all their packages early.
They said that during the Christmas holiday mailing season, which begins after Thanksgiving and ends Dec. 31., postal officials will handle more than 4.5 billion cards, letters, and packages.
This year's mailing is expected to be up 1 percent from last year.
``Mail volume is growing just because the number of people is growing,'' said Bouffiou. ``We're right on schedule.''
