POSITIVE LIVING MINISTRY MARKS BIRTHDAY IN SIMI FOCUS PLACED ON SPIRITUALITY.

Byline: Angela Randazzo Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY - Celebrating its 15th anniversary in Simi Valley, the Religious Science Center for Positive Living offers a variety of seminars, workshops and support groups, as well as Sunday services.

The center is part of the national Religious Science organization founded and based on the teachings of Ernest Holmes in his book, ``The Science of Mind,'' written in 1927.

``We're focusing on spirituality rather than religion,'' said Dennis Merritt Jones, pastor and director of the center. ``We've created a center where people can come through the doors and carry whatever religious beliefs they might have and still find something of value.''

Already a resident of the area for 25 years, Jones recently moved to Thousand Oaks with his wife, Diane, who works for Simi Valley, and their 15-year-old daughter. He has degrees in music and marketing as well as in ministry.

Jones started the Simi Valley center in April 1985 in what is now the Simi Valley Cultural Center. The current facility on Erringer Road includes a chapel, classrooms and bookstore.

The center, which has about 250 core members, offers programs such as story times for children at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and support groups for men, women and teen-agers.

In August, Jones taught a workshop for business people who were looking to maintain their spirituality in the workplace. Encouraged by the enthusiastic turnout, Jones plans to offer his Business Operators Supporting Spirituality seminar quarterly.

Jones will teach a seminar based on Gary Zukav's best-selling book ``Seat of the Soul'' at 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 16. The cost is $50.

``This teaching is coming of age,'' said Jones. ``We're trying to bring ideas to the forefront that people can use every day.''

There are also centers in Westlake Village, Oxnard, Camarillo and Ventura.

The center will host a Fiesta Monte Carlo night from 6 to 11 Aug. 4 at Rancho de las Palmas Rancho in Moorpark. Tickets are $30.

The Simi Valley Religious Science Center for Positive Living is located at 1756 Erringer Road, Simi Valley. Call (805) 527-0870 or visit www.onespirit.org.
