``He's a sweetheart, always so cheerful that it rubs off on everybody else,'' said Mahin Sattar, another nurse. ``We call him Speedy because he walks so fast and is always happy.''

Except on a day about one month ago. Mark wasn't cheerful or happy when he arrived that day at the hospital where he has worked for 25 years - as a volunteer even before he got his weekend job.

He was down, as down as anyone at the hospital has ever seen him.

``Somebody stole my bike,'' Mark told his boss, Gene Gershenhorn.

``I was in a management meeting later that day and happened to mention that somebody had stolen Mark's bike,'' said Gershenhorn, pharmacy director at the hospital.

``After the meeting, everybody came up to me wanting to donate money to help him buy another bike,'' he said. ``I've never seen anything like it. I knew Mark was popular around here, but this was really something.''

Before long, the nurses were checking in, too. They had heard about Mark's stolen bike. They wanted to know what they could give.

Then, the hospital volunteers - from the front desk to the gift shop to the cafeteria cafeteria: see restaurant.  - checked in. They asked who was taking up the collection.

In the end, though, board members in the hospital's community foundation told everybody they already were picking up the tab for Mark's new bike.

``When we heard about how all the employees and volunteers cared so much about this man that they wanted to buy him a new one, we voted unanimously to get Mark the best three-wheeler we could find,'' said Sandi Miller-Goldman, chairwoman of the Encino-Tarzana Hospital Community Foundation.

They know a valuable employee and major asset to the hospital when they see one, she said.

So, in a ceremony Wednesday in the front lobby, they gave Mark his new bike. He doesn't have to walk to work anymore.

``How about me?'' David said. They had met at a workshop in the Valley where developmentally disabled adults are trained and hired for jobs.

Mark was learning how to put handles on suitcases; David, to put tags on towels.

``We started talking and found out we had more in common that just our last names,'' David said.

He smiled in the hospital lobby while he watched Mark thank another stranger for the new bike.

The woman had no idea what he was talking about, but she was smiling.

Then Mark got on his new three-wheeler, and David got on his old one, and the two roommates rode their bikes home together.

Mark's new three-wheeler is going inside the condo from now on, so don't even think about it.
