POPPIES AND ALL THAT JAZZ A.V. FESTIVAL SET TO FLOWER.

LANCASTER - Music, arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts. , a flower market, environmental displays and carnival rides will welcome California's state flower at Lancaster's ninth annual California Poppy California poppy: see poppy.

Though poppies at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is a California wildlife reserve located in the rural westside of the Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County. ``We have a lot of blooms this year, but it will probably be a moderate year as compared to other years. It won't be a golden-field type year,'' said state parks aide April Tibbetts. ``We are looking to about two more weeks before we see peak blooming. We do have quite a few blooms out there so it's worth it to come out and see how beautiful they are.''

Headliners on the Poppy Stage - one of three stages offering simultaneous entertainment - include jazz saxophonist Eric Marienthal Eric Marienthal is a Los Angeles-based contemporary saxophonist best known for his work in the jazz, smooth jazz, and pop genres.

After graduating high school in Southern California in 1976, Eric went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass.
 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by singer Kevin Mahogany Kevin Mahogany (born 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American jazz vocalist prominent in the 1990's.[1]

During high school, he taught clarinet and was a featured baritone saxophonist and pianist in several jazz bands.
 at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with his combination of jazz, blues, crooning, scatting, gospel and an occasional country song.

Jazz trumpeter Mark Isham's band will perform at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in a tribute to jazz legend Miles Davis Noun 1. Miles Davis - United States jazz musician; noted for his trumpet style (1926-1991)

 with a selection of '60s and '70s jazz. Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling and his Quartet will perform at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

In a change of pace from the festival's jazz theme, Andean Nation, a South American-style music group, will perform both days using instruments including the siku, a flute similar to the panpipe panpipe

Sunday's Oasis Stage lineup will include Test Flight at 10:30 a.m.; Walker Gibson, a folk band, at 12:15 p.m.; Blind Date, a classic rock band, at 2 p.m.; and Travelin' Lite at 3:45 p.m.

Aside from listening to the music, festival visitors will be able to view and purchase arts and crafts during the festival's Arts/Crafts and Fine Arts Show, which will feature more than 200 exhibitors from across California.

Vendors and artists will offer paintings, pottery, porcelain, clothing, jewelry, furniture, ceramics, glass, and other times for exhibit and sale throughout the weekend. Prices will range from $1 to more than $300.

Also featured will be paintings by the late Jane S. Pinheiro of Lancaster, one of the people who pushed for creation of the 1,700-acre California Poppy Reserve, on Lancaster Road about 10 miles west of Lancaster. She was known for the detail and accuracy of her wildflower wildflower

Flower Garden and Market vendors will sell fresh flowers, bedding plants, shrubs and small trees. Cacti, silk and dried flowers, wildflower seeds, garden ornaments and fountains will also be available.

For $15, festival visitors can take a five- to seven-minute helicopter ride over the festival grounds. Longer rides over the surrounding area are offered for $75.

The Sidewalk Chalk Art and Color Splash will let visitors rent a section of sidewalk - for $2, $3, or $4 - to try their hand at creating art on their strip.

More than 25 food vendors will offer a wide variety of foods.

Admission is $6 for ages 13 to 61, and $3 for ages 62 and over and for children 6 through 12. Children under 5 are free and parking is $2 per car.
