POOL OPENS AS SUMMER ARRIVES; LOCAL RESIDENTS APPRECIATE FACILITY.

El Cariso Regional Park opened its pool to the public for the first time this year on Saturday, just in time for David Cooper David Cooper may be:

``This is basically the first day of summer for us,'' said Cooper, a 35-year-old big-rig driver from Sylmar. ``We've been waiting for this for a while because it's been overcast in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . The latter wasn't an option for 11-year-old Sylmar resident Sean Peterson, who, with two sisters and a friend, walked two miles to the park, which charges people $2 to use the pool.

``I've looked forward to this a lot,'' Sean said. ``I come here every summer. All I have at my house is a baby pool.''

Sean's sister, 15-year-old Rhiana Lewis, had more than swimming laps or diving off the board on her mind.

``We just want to relax and look at all the cute lifeguards,'' said Rhiana as she and her sister headed to the water.

The larger of the two pools at the park is watched at all times by six lifeguards, said senior lifeguard Mike Tollack, a 20-year-old college junior on summer break.

``A lot of the younger kids come to see their friends and hang out during the day and cool off,'' Tollack said. ``Some families come out because it's something to do, and it's not very expensive.''

Debbie Ludwig, 28, of Sylmar sat with her feet in the water as her four children, ages 5 to 8, played in the shallow pool for youngsters.

``They're really excited, they've been bugging me to go,'' she said, noting a benefit of this exercise. ``It wears them out so when I bring them home they'll go straight to bed.''

Amid all the horse play and sunbathers, Jeff Simms, 26, of Burbank and his friend Michael Wong Michael Wong is the name of:

``It's really convenient and nice to have an olympic-size pool so close by,'' said Simms, who, with Wong, works at a medical equipment manufacturer.
