PONTIAC ROUNDING OUT 1993 MODEL YEAR WITH CONTINUED STRONG SALES

PONTIAC, Mich., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- As the 1993 model year winds down, Pontiac Division rounds out the month of August with strong sales of Sunbird, Grand Prix and the all-new Firebird.
Sales of Pontiac's Sunbird for the last 10 days of August were 3,690 -- a whopping 146 percent over last year's sales tally. This 10-day increase boosted the monthly total 62 percent over last year's total -- with 6,817 units delivered in August. Sunbird has racked up sales of nearly 80,000 units this model year.
But the good news doesn't stop there: The midsize Pontiac Grand Prix picked up some ground by posting 6,409 units during the month, a 12 percent increase over August of 1992.
Ten-day sales spiked upward for the completely redesigned 1993 Firebird models -- the Coupe, Formula and Trans Am -- notching a 28.4 percent increase over the 10-day period a year ago. Now that Firebirds are being produced on two shifts at General Motors Ste. Therese, Quebec, assembly plant, capacity constraints should ease. For the month of August, Pontiac dealers delivered nearly 2,000 of the trend-setting sportscars, an increase of 3 percent over last year.
Pontiac's 3-year/36,000-mile SmartDrive program, introduced on all carlines Feb. 1 of this year, has helped boost overall Pontiac sales 4 percent for the month of August. The short-term finance program accounted for more than 12 percent of Pontiac's retail sales for the '93 calendar year and nearly 15 percent of August sales.
