PONTIAC POSTS RECORD SALES IN CALIFORNIA

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Record numbers of Californians are now experiencing Pontiac Driving Excitement firsthand, as the division posted record retail sales increases for both the month of November and model year to date. Compared to 1993, retail sales in the Golden State are up a hefty 62 percent (to 1,390 units) for November and 36 percent (to 2,793 units) for the model year.
Pontiac's sales picture has been steadily improving since the model year began, as product availability catches up with increased consumer demand. Leading the hit parade in California are record November retail sales for Grand Prix, Sunbird and Trans Sport -- up 139 percent, 159 percent and 35 percent, respectively. Model-year totals are also up for these three nameplates -- and for Firebird which has posted a 155 percent increase.
Pontiac's retail sales picture for California's greater metropolitan areas mirrors the increases posted within the state as a whole. Highlights from these areas include:
-- San Francisco -- a 69 percent increase in November sales and a 63 percent rise in model year-to-date sales.
-- Los Angeles -- a 63 percent increase in November sales and a 26 percent rise in model year-to-date sales.
-- Sacramento -- a 111 percent increase in November sales and a 45 percent increase in model year-to-date sales.
-- San Diego -- a 60 percent increase in November sales and a 26 percent increase in model year-to-date sales.
Jim Murray, Pontiac's western area assistant general sales and service manager, says the increases are directly attributable to the launch of the Value Selling marketing initiative -- the new way General Motors is doing business in the state of California as of the 1994 model year.
"California is the largest automotive marketplace in the world, and the most competitive," notes Murray. "We're taking aim at the import- dominated California market and, thanks to Value Selling, now have the ammunition to attract and retain this important customer base. Each California Value Selling vehicle is outfitted with the comfort, convenience, and performance features Californians say they want ... as standard equipment, and specially priced to offer the best value in its market segment.
"There will always be the die-hard import buyers who won't consider the purchase of a domestic vehicle," he adds, "but their numbers are diminishing. We're attracting those knowledgeable Californians who realize Pontiac Driving Excitement means high quality, fun-to-drive vehicles priced to represent an outstanding value."
"Pontiac has a lot to be cheering about not only in California, but the nation as a whole," said Murray. "Our record sales boost here in California helped push our national sales for the month up 32.2 percent to 49,070 units and model year sales up 17 percent to 96,729 units over those of a year ago."
