POLLAK, VALLEY-BORN ECOLOGIST FOR STATE NATURE CONSERVANCY.Byline: Daily News Oren Pollak, who worked as the stewardship ecologist for California for the Nature Conservancy Nature Conservancy, nonprofit organization established in 1951 to preserve or aid in the preservation of natural environments. It protects wilderness areas in the United States and Canada and is affiliated with similar groups in Latin America and the Caribbean. It maintains the world's largest private system of nature sanctuaries., was killed in a head-on crash in Tasmania on Friday. Pollak, 39, was a graduate of Van Nuys High School who worked for the Nature Conservancy in California for eight years before joining the organization's Oregon staff. Pollak's wife, Suki, was critically injured in the crash, but their 9-month-old son, Noah, was unhurt. As director of stewardship for the Nature Conservancy in Oregon, Pollak was an expert in natural area management, grassland restoration and the use of controlled burning in ecological restoration. Pollak is also survived by his parents, Jerry and Marcia Pollak of Sherman Oaks, his brother, Michael Pollak, and sister, Shira Lee. |
