POLISHED GLAMOUR IN VOGUE AT GLOBES.

Byline: Barbara De Witt Daily News Fashion Editor

Brooke Shields was the Golden Girl of the Golden Globes.

In her stunning red gown, the star of TV's ``Suddenly Susan'' oozed with Old Hollywood glamour as she made her way into the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the awards - and inadvertently upstaged Madonna, who was directly behind her.

Madonna? Wow, did she have a bad hair day, with those straggly strag·gly

sausage curls. With her rumpled retro gown, she'll probably land on Mr. Blackwell's Worst Dressed list again.

Frances Fisher, also on Blackwell's newest list, was stylin' in a sassy sas·sy 1

silver Missoni gown. She even joked that she was going to send the fashion arbiter a photo of her new look.

Overall, the fashion stance of the evening was polished glamour.

Black was still basic, but there was a trend to light-and-bright gowns. Standouts included ``Dharma dharma (där`mə). In Hinduism, dharma is the doctrine of the religious and moral rights and duties of each individual; it generally refers to religious duty, but may also mean social order, right conduct, or simply virtue.  and Greg'' star Jenna Elfman's lacy green Valentino gown, ``Touched By An Angel'' star Roma Downey in a lavender creation by Halston, and ``Frasier'' star Perri Gilpin who wore a red rose design by Pamela Dennis.

Multicolored glass beads and sequins made a sparkling comeback, looking especially fab on Sandra Bullock, who chose a blue-and-black beaded design by John Galliano for Christian Dior.

Blond-again Julia Roberts, star of ``My Best Friend's Wedding,'' also shined in a Todd Oldham gown that featured a beaded retro-inspired floral pattern on black chiffon.

In the sea of black, Helena Bonham Bonham can refer to:
  • Bonhams, a British auction house
  • Dr. Bonham's Case, a legal case decided in 1610 concerning the supremacy of the common law in England
  • Bonham, Texas, USA
  • Bonham (band), heavy metal band formed by Jason Bonham

Meanwhile, ``L.A. Confidential'' co-star Kim Bassinger, on the arm of her husband, Alec Baldwin, got high marks for her '50s-inspired cocktail dress with a halter neckline neckline

Gillian Anderson of ``X-Files'' wore a Herve Leger gown, too, but she looked like she was going to fall out of its scalloped scal·lop   also scol·lop or es·cal·lop

One of the freshest looks of the evening was from nominee Sigourney Weaver, who wore big dark glasses and bright pink pumps with a beaded cage-like design by Prada.

Jennifer Lopez, the steamy star of ``Selena,'' was a hit with the crowd in a clingy pastel design by Valentino that looked like it was sewn on her - a trick often used by Marilyn Monroe.

Although beaded dresses are the big news, several stars were dazzling in satins, including Mare Winningham in an ivory Vera Wang gown and Simbi Khali of ``Third Rock From the Sun'' who wore a pink-and-green Margy Kent design with a skirt over toreador pants.
