The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police officers union has endorsed Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley.  over four Democratic rivals in the race to succeed Assemblyman Richard Katz in the 39th District, campaign and union officials said Thursday.

The support from the Los Angeles Police Protective League - which represents the LAPD's 8,400 rank-and-file officers - could weigh heavily in the March 26 primary since all five contenders have made crime a central campaign issue.

"Public-safety issues and who police officers have confidence in is important to the community," said the league president, Cliff Ruff.

Democratic rival Jim Dantona has touted endorsements that he has received from several other public-safety groups, including the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. But Alejandro Padilla, manager of the Cardenas campaign, said the backing of the Police Protective League carries greater political cachet cachet /ca·chet/ (ka-sha´) a disk-shaped wafer or capsule enclosing a dose of medicine.

He said the endorsement was to be formally announced today at a news conference at the LAPD's Foothill Division in Pacoima.

Declaration of the league's support comes days after the state Democratic Party Executive Committee voted to back Cardenas, ending a dispute over an earlier endorsement vote that rivals charged was rigged by allies of Cardenas.

"Tony played by the rules and won. Any suggestion to the contrary was simply untrue," said Kathleen Bowler, executive director of the state party.
