``Our theme this year is `Together We Make a Safer Neighborhood,' '' said Julie Smith, spokeswoman for Moorpark police officers, who are sponsoring the event. ``And the whole point is getting your neighbors out and just getting to know them. She added, ``Working together as a community makes our whole community safer and - a plus - this is a party where the police are actually invited.''

The event is part of a national movement for each community to set aside at least one night in August for neighbors to get to know each other and the police. Homeowners associations, Neighborhood Watch groups and others organize the activities.
