The victim's common-law wife of 17 years, Socorro Renteria, 57, drove Arellanes to an abandoned area on the Burbank-North Hollywood border, telling him that he was invited to a New Year's Eve party, Brown said.

Instead, Ulloa and Renteria's son, Martin Espino, 34, were lying in wait to kill Arellanes, police said.

The trio ambushed Arellanes, who was on foot, chasing him with a van across the street and firing at least 20 shots. Then Ulloa allegedly cornered Arellanes in a residential driveway in the 1400 block of Clybourne Avenue before shooting him in the head, Brown said.

``They're chasing him down like an animal. It's like a hunt,'' Brown said. ``He was right on top of him when he shot him.''

Police said they believe the brutal killing was carried out just past midnight so that the sound of gunfire would blend in Verb 1. blend in - blend or harmonize; "This flavor will blend with those in your dish"; "This sofa won't go with the chairs"
