POLICE SAY PAIR RAN BACKYARD DRUG LAB.Byline: Daily News Two men were arrested Thursday night, accused of manufacturing amphetamine 1. a sympathomimetic amine with a stimulating effect on both the central and peripheral nervous systems, used in the treatment of narcolepsy and attention-deficit, usually as the sulfate or aspartate salt. Abuse may lead to dependence. 2. any drug closely related to amphetamine and having similar actions, e.g., methamphetamine. in the back yard of a Canyon Country home - unknown to the residents, a sheriff's narcotics investigator said Friday. The suspects, unidentified as the investigation continued, were booked on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance, said sheriff's Sgt. Randy Dickey. Responding to a tip, deputies on patrol went to the Stillmore Street home and found the two men in the process of extracting ephedrine ephedrine /ephed·rine/ (e-fed´rin) (ef´e-drin) an adrenergic extracted from several species of Ephedra or produced synthetically; used in the form of the hydrochloride, sulfate, or tannate salt as a bronchodilator, antiallergic, central nervous system stimulant, and antihypotensive. - used in the manufacture of ``speed'' - from over-the-counter cold pills, Dickey said. The house is across the street from Sierra Vista Junior High School. Some chemicals used in the manufacturing process can be explosive, Dickey said, but nothing volatile was found at the site. The suspects, he added, did not live at the house. ``The people at the location are basically victims of what was going on,'' he said. They apparently were using a camp stove to heat cold pills that had been soaked, a process used to extract the ephedrine. Dickey said details were being withheld as investigators sought further suspects. |
