``We believe that he had been stalking her,'' said John White, the woman's boss, who called 911 and organized a search party Saturday night after the gas station was found unattended. ``I think he had planned this out.''

Kern County Sheriff's Department deputies are investigating whether Adams was responsible for a Dec. 21 attempted kidnapping at the Albertson's parking lot in Rosamond.

She was bound, her eyes and mouth taped shut, then thrown into a car trunk and driven into the desert and raped, officials said.

Her abductor drove her to a motel, assaulted her again in a room there, and then dropped her off at a Denny's restaurant in Mojave, about seven hours after she was kidnapped, deputies said.

The woman notified restaurant workers, who called authorities.

White, who owns White's Shell Station and Mini Mart and whose brother owns the adjoining White's Motel, said more than 30 friends, family and co-workers searched the town and surrounding desert for hours seeking the missing woman.

A helicopter and an airplane also joined in the search.

They were still searching when she was released at the restaurant.

``We didn't know what we were looking for,'' said White. ``We just know we had to search. We were looking for anything that looked suspicious.''
