Byline: Jason Kandel Staff Writer

In one of their first tests of the LAPD's new pursuit policy, officers chased an armed man through the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Police called off their pursuit of Robert Alvizo, 28, because he was not endangering the public, and police knew where he lived and worked.

``What I saw was that officers were exercising restraint,'' said Deputy Chief Ron Bergmann, the Valley Bureau's commander, who trailed the chase in his car. ``The supervisor in charge of the pursuit and the officers did a great job.''

Lt. Tom Smart, of the West Valley Division, said the tactic also prevented the distraught dis·traught

``They showed good safety,'' he said. ``They didn't allow him to do suicide by cop. They gave him plenty of space.''

Officer Jack Richter said the criteria for this pursuit was perfect.

Several police divisions have already begun working under the new pursuit guidelines, which are still being developed. A date for the new policy has not been set.

Alvizo was taken into custody for a mental evaluation and questioning about 11:20 a.m. after parking at Mulholland and Calneva drives in Encino.

Police said they were in the process of booking him on weapons possession charges. He has a misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence, police said.

Before he surrendered, Alvizo accidentally fired a round from his .38- caliber revolver revolver: see small arms.

The chase began about 8:30 a.m. after Alvizo's wife came into the West Valley station to say they had been arguing, and she feared he would hurt himself, police said.
