POLICE ARREST BUSINESSMAN IN GIRLFRIEND'S KIDNAPPING.

CHATSWORTH - A 42-year-old man was arrested early Monday on suspicion of kidnapping kidnapping, in law, the taking away of a person by force, threat, or deceit, with intent to cause him to be detained against his will. Kidnapping may be done for ransom or for political or other purposes.  his girlfriend after a tense standoff stand·off

After he let the woman go at Devonshire Street and DeSoto Avenue about 10 p.m., Moreno said Wernli holed himself up at his business and told police he was armed and ``would not be taken alive.''

After lengthy negotiation, Wernli surrendered to Special Weapons and Tactics officers at 4:40 a.m., police said. He was taken to Van Nuys Jail, were he was booked on suspicion of kidnapping and held in lieu of $100,000 bail, officials said.
