James Arthur Pugh, 41, was arrested at a North Hollywood motel and is being held on suspicion of bank robbery. He is a suspect in as many as 21 bank robberies since May 8, including 16 in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Authorities say Pugh previously had been convicted in a dozen bank robberies in the Los Angeles area.

In the latest spree, the suspect also was referred to by police as the ``Bicycle Bandit'' because he would ride away from the banks on a black mountain bike, before escaping in a broken down truck, police said.

On Thursday, Pugh allegedly was seen driving a vehicle that matched the description of the one used in a robbery of a California Federal Bank California Federal Bank, often abbreviated to "Cal Fed", was a savings and loan bank in California. It existed from 1926 until 2002, when its parent company Golden State Bancorp was acquired by Citigroup, resulting in the bank being merged into Citibank.  in Santa Clarita that same day.

 units and sheriff's deputies from Santa Clarita stopped the vehicle at Chatsworth Street and Balboa Boulevard. One woman in the car was arrested as a suspected accomplice, Los Angeles police Detective Tom Gattegno said, but Pugh managed to escape.

``He commandeered a Dodge car and he fled in that,'' Gattegno said.

They said that 15 minutes later, Pugh allegedly robbed First Citizen's Bank at 5000 Van Nuys Blvd., Gattegno said.

The next day, Friday, Pugh allegedly attempted to rob a bank in Burbank. Then, later in the day, he is believed to have held up a Glendale Federal Bank branch at 12191 Ventura Blvd. in Studio City.

Then, on Tuesday morning, North Hollywood Division officers checking local motels for the stolen Dodge, found it in a motel parking lot on Vineland Avenue, Gattegno said.

He had been staying at the motel for about two days.
