POLICE: SEIZURE CAUSED CRASH.

 officials said Friday that a collision that killed a Sylmar teen the night before apparently occurred when the other car's driver suffered a seizure.

Gregory Kiraly, 19, of Sylmar died from the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision Thursday night.

The collision occurred about 8:45 p.m. Thursday as 41-year-old Francisco Garcia of North Hollywood traveled northbound on Laurel Canyon Boulevard Laurel Canyon Boulevard is a major street in the city of Los Angeles, California. It starts off at Polk Street in Sylmar in the northern San Fernando Valley near the junction of the San Diego (Interstate 405) and the Golden State Freeways (Interstate 5).  in a 1993 Ford Thunderbird The Ford Thunderbird was a car manufactured in the United States by the Ford Motor Company. It entered production for the 1955 Ford Thunderbird model year as a two-seater sporty car but, unlike the similar Chevrolet Corvette, the Thunderbird was never sold as a full-blown sports  and crossed over the center median, colliding with a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle driven by Kiraly.

The impact caused Kiraly to suffer major trauma to his entire left side. He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

One of two juveniles also traveling in the Volkswagen suffered a severe head injury; the other suffered a fractured pelvis, officials said.

Garcia and his passenger, 34-year-old Jeff Clark of Valley Glen, both suffered minor injuries.

Following the collision, Garcia submitted to a breath test, which indicated he had no alcohol in his system. He also voluntarily submitted to a blood test. Those results are not yet available.

A drug recognition expert Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) police officers are trained to be able to identify drug impaired drivers. DRE refers not only to the officers themselves, but to the 12-step procedure that these officers use.  at the scene determined that Garcia was not under the influence of drugs.

 and has been under a doctor's care for about 30 years, and that it appeared a seizure may have triggered the collision. Garcia was released at the crash site, and the investigation is continuing, officials said.
